East/West

Hi all!

So the other day we randomly decided to go and check out the current exhibitions at the Frost Art Museum.

The two most recent Asian inspired exhibitions at the museum were definitely the highlight of our visit. 

The "East/West: Visually Speaking" exhibition is a collection of works by 12 different Chinese artists who through their work, express their interpretation of how Western culture has influenced Eastern Chinese society. 

"Tribute to Japanese Splendor: The Art of the Temari" a personal favorite, is an exhibition of Temari by artist Sharon Thieman. Temari are handcrafted embellished balls, that have been part of Japanese tradition for centuries. These beautiful and intricately woven pieces of art are said to be highly admired gifts in Japanese culture, as they represent friendship and loyalty and are emblematic of wishing the recipient happiness and joy.

 Legend has it that mothers would weave temari as New Years gifts for their children. They would place the temari next to the sleeping child during New Year's Eve, and on the first day of the new year, once the child awoke, the colorful little ball would be their first happy memory of the year. 

Isn't is fascinating? I can't wait to own one myself! 

Anyway, Eastern Asian culture has proven once again to be incredibly rich and captivating.
